Actually I would have preferred it if INEC allowed people to register themselves online without having to go out to queues at places to register. There has been cases of hitches at registration points across Nigeria as the nation warms up for the 2011 general elections. They should have at least allowed people who want to use the internet to register to do so, while others who don't wish to can still go to their official points to register, I mean, this is the 21st century.
The Independent Electoral Commission has begun a formal registration of Nigerian citizens in order to get an updated and accredited voter's list prior to the general elections. Already, most primary and secondary schools across the nation has been closed till February in order to allow people to fully partake in the activity.
In order to register with INEC, it doesn't really take much of your time as the registration points are virtually free of crowds and you could come and go in a haste without much delay.
Here is what the INEC officials want you to do when going to register:How to Register
- Go to the nearest INEC registration spot from your home (Don't register close to your office if your don't live close to the place)
- Give your surname, first name and other names
- Give your date of birth and occupation
- Present your 10 fingers for biometric scanning
- A quick photograph of you would be taken
- Go to the computer screen to confirm all your details before it it printed
- Your voter's card would be printed in the form of paper and laminated and given to you.
- Now you are ready to vote for Nigeria's 2011 general electionsNote: Don't register or vote twice since you would be caught and could face legal consequences which could be a jail of 2 years, a fine of N200,000 or both.INEC needs to do something about registration facilities and materials. There has been cases of INEC machines rejecting finger prints of people such as our former President Obasanjo. During my registration also, there was no scanner and they encouraged us to do scanning elsewhere or come back later for it to be scanned since it was not working then.Deadline for INEC 2011 registration: I heard that the registration deadline for INEC would be by the 29th of January 2011 but it's in the news that it could be extended
